2024 Matric Pass Rate Sees A Drop
Minister Angie Motshekga announced the Class of 2024’s Matric pass rate which, just as expected, was lower that last year’s. The results are however still something to be proud of when looking at the impact of Covid-19 on the school year.
The Matric Class of 2024 produced a pass rate of 76.2% which shows a decline of 5.1% when compared to last year’s pass rate.
Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, announced the 2024 Matric results on Monday afternoon, along with the Deputy Minister, Reginah Mhaule.
I’m very happy that indeed in the midst of all the difficulties, we’re able to say 76.2% with more quality passes this year.
The overall pass mark has improved this year, as well as the passes of distinctions, said Motshekga. The Class of 2024 is said to have given the best academic performance in the system.
Of the passes, 36.4% were Bachelors passes, 26% were Diploma passes, 13.7% were Higher Certificate passes and only 0.01% were National Senior Certificate (NSC) passes.
Free State produced the highest pass rate with 85.1%, a decline of 3.2% from last year.
Gauteng got a 83.8% pass rate, with a decline of 3.5% from 2024.
Western Cape achieved a pass rate of 79.9%.
Kwazulu-Natal has the most learners in the country and came fourth in provincial pass rates with a pass rate of 77.6%, a decline of 3.7% from 2024.
North West got a pass rate of 76.2%.
Mpumalanga got a pass rate of 73.7%.
Limpopo got a 68.2% pass rate.
Eastern Cape achieved a 68.1%.
Northern Cape achieved a pass rate of 66%.
There were 725 034 registered candidates for the NSC in 2024. 607 226 of these were full-time candidates and 117 800 were part-time candidates. Added to this was the June and December exams which brought the total of candidates writing to over 1 million, the highest it has ever been.
147 question papers were set, 8 million were printed and 706 million scripts were marked. Almost 65 000 exam invigilators were hired along with 45 272 markers in 179 marking centres.
Matrics will start receiving their results tonight at midnight and will be able to head to schools tomorrow to receive their results statements.

The release of the matric results have been approved by Umalusi, the Quality Council in General and Further Education and Training.
