What is an Essay: definition and types.

An essay is a piece of writing that expresses the author’s personal point of view; yet, the definition is ambiguous, merging with those of a letter, a paper, an article, a pamphlet, and a short fiction.

There are many different types of essays, but they are often defined in four categories: argumentative, expository, narrative, and descriptive essays.

1. Argumentative essay

An argumentative essay is a piece of writing that presents a lengthy, evidence-based case. It necessitates a strong thesis statement a well-defined position on your subject. Your goal is to use evidence (such as quotations) and analysis to persuade the reader of your position.

Argumentative essays put your abilities to investigate and convey your own point of view on a subject to the test. At the undergraduate level, this is the most prevalent style of essay—almost every paper you write will include some form of arguing.

2. Expository Essay.

An expository essay clarifies a topic. It doesn’t require a unique argument, simply a balanced and planned approach.

Expository essays assess your knowledge and ability to organize and communicate information. They are frequently assigned in high school or on college exams. An expository essay has three parts: an introduction, a body, and a conclusion.

3. Narrative Essay.

An essay that conveys a story. An experiential story, but it can also be an imaginative investigation of something you haven’t experienced.

Narrative essays assess your ability to construct a captivating narrative. They are more imaginative and personal than typical academic writing. Writing an application personal statement is similar to writing a narrative essay.

An introduction, body, and conclusion aren’t required in a narrative essay, but they should still be included.

4. Descriptive Essay.

A descriptive essay describes something in sensory detail. They, like narrative essays, allow for greater creativity than typical academic writing, but they are more concentrated. Rather than delivering a story, you might describe a place or an object.

Descriptive essays need you to employ imaginative word choices to paint a vivid image of what you’re discussing.

A descriptive essay’s format is flexible, but it should normally begin with an introduction and end with a summary. The key is to utilize well-chosen words and metaphors to describe your object.
