The Morrill Act allowed for the establishment of OSU in 1890. With more than 35,000 students enrolled across its five campuses and a $1.5 billion yearly budget, Oklahoma State University System’s flagship institution was once known as Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College (Oklahoma A&M).

For the fall 2023 semester, there were 24,071 students enrolled on the main campus, including 20,024 undergraduates and 4,017 graduate students.

The R1 category for doctoral universities with a high level of research activity includes OSU. The National Science Foundation estimates that OSU spent $198.8 million on R&D in 2023. 

Following Stanford University, University of California, Los Angeles, and the University of Southern California in terms of most NCAA team national championships won are the 52 national championships won by the Oklahoma State Cowboys and Cowgirls.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys wrestling team has had the greatest success of any NCAA Division I program ever. [11] As of 2023, 34 Olympic medals have been earned by Oklahoma State students and graduates (21 gold, 5 silver, and 8 bronze).

The university has turned out 48 Fulbright Scholars, 29 Goldwater Scholars, 18 Truman Scholars, 18 Udall Scholars, astronauts, and a billionaire.

In terms of contributions to UN Sustainable Development Goals, OSU is ranked top 10 globally and top 100 globally. 

Students spend a portion of the fall semester getting ready for Ohio State University’s Homecoming festivities, which have been held annually since 1913 and attract more than 70,000 participants and 40,000 alumni to campus.

All applicants to Ohio State University must submit their SAT or ACT scores. 39% of accepted students who were in the 2018–19 admissions cycle submitted their SAT scores.
