How Often Should Your Brushes Be Cleaned?

The regularity with which you should clean your brushes is determined by how frequently you use them. You could do this once a week or once a month. If you have breakouts or other skin problems, clean your brushes more frequently.

Step-by-step guidelines on how to clean your makeup brushes

Soak your brush in water.

Using lukewarm water, wet the bristles of the brush. Always wet your brushes upside down to prevent water from getting into the ferrule (the metal component underneath the bristles) and causing the glue to disintegrate over time.

Mix in the cleanser.

In your palm, place a dime-sized amount of cleanser.

Dip the brush in the cleanser and swirl it around.

In the other hand, spin the bristles of a dirty brush in your palm with the cleanser until the brush feels totally soaked with the solution.

Rinse and repeat the process.

Rinse the cleaner out of the bristles with warm water. You’ll probably notice that the water is coloured when you’re washing out the brush at this stage. It’s a good idea to repeat steps 2 and 3 a few times until the water flows clean if the brushes are particularly dirty.

Remove any extra water by squeezing it out.

Squeeze out the extra water with your hand after the brushes are as clean as you’d like, then wipe the bristles dry with a clean towel.

Allow to dry on a level surface.

Return the brush heads to their original shapes and lay them flat on a paper towel to air dry overnight. Make sure not to dry them upright, as this could allow moisture to seep into the brush and cause mildew to grow.
