Overview Of Rusell College: Introduction

To provide qualitative education to a large number of people that are looking for it is a herculean task and must not be left for the government alone.

Therefore, we must continue to appreciate the efforts of private institutions that have ameliorated the burden of being “sole education providers from the government”.

Russell Sage falls into this category of schools or institutions, and while their actions are to a large extent motivated by profit, they have made giant strides in the education department and as such should be applauded.

About Russell Sage College

Rusell College was founded by a suffragist, Margaret Olivia Slocum Sage in 1916, as a school of arts. The institution was named after her husband, Russell, who was a Congressman and a  business mogul applying his trading expertise as a railroad executive.

Mrs. Sage was active in the women’s suffrage movement; and therefore, founding the new College, was also a means of providing or helping women become independent.

Which she achieved through the combination of a broad education in the liberal arts with preparation for specific professional careers.

Initially, the college operated under the charter of the Emma Willard School, granting its first baccalaureate degree in 1918 and graduating its first class in 1920.

However, In 1927, the New York State Board of Regents granted a separate charter for Russell Sage College and reaffirmed the status of Emma Willard as a secondary school.

In 1949, an Albany Division was opened, offering two-year, four-year, and graduate degrees under the charter of Russell Sage College. It was in the same year that it extended the College’s mission to include the education of men on the second campus.

This was after setting up an “emergency men’s division” during the Second World War.

The college has since been granted powers to confer graduate and postgraduate degrees, and also to run an evening program.

Meanwhile, on July 1, 2023 , Russell Sage College, Sage College of Albany, and Sage Graduate Schools united under a single name: Russell Sage College. And became one college with two co-educational campuses in Albany and Troy, New York.
