The Portal to Texas History provides access to rare, historic, and original sources from or about Texas.
The Portal, which was created and is run by the University of North Texas Libraries, draws on the expertise of hundreds of content partners dispersed around the state to provide a vibrant and ever-expanding collection of materials.
Communities all around Texas have tangible holdings that represent hundreds of years of cultural history.
The Portal aims to digitize originals so that long-term online copies can be preserved and shown.

History of Portal Development
The planning for The Portal to Texas History, a digital portal to historical resources from private collectors and collaborative partners including libraries, museums, archives, and other historical institutions, started in 2002 at the UNT Libraries.
The Portal had to guarantee its long-term viability.
Because of widespread support from interested parties, we could start the project thanks to a grant from the State of Texas Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund.
By the end of 2004, the Portal had five collaborative partners and over 6500 digital photos available online.
Around 1,000 people per month used the online collections.
We introduced the postal service for Educators in 2005, offering a selection of resources for instructors.
In 2007, we started scanning Texas newspapers for the National Digital Newspaper Program with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) (NDNP).
The public can access these newspapers through the Portal and the Chronicling America website of the Library of Congress.
In order to help towns whose newspapers were beyond the purview of NDNP, we also developed the Texas Digital Newspaper Program (TDNP).
Our collections grew as new partners, money, and material were added each year.
By 2023/2024, there were 408 partners contributing over 12.7 million digital photos to the Portal. More than a million people from across the world use online collections each month.

Digital Projects Unit
With the help and digital services including imaging, archival storage of electronic materials, metadata generation, and other tasks as required, the Digital Projects Unit helps the UNT Libraries.
We continue to be active members of the state, national, and worldwide professional organizations as well as actively explore research possibilities in digital preservation and access.
The UNT Digital Library and The Portal to Texas History are two examples of collaborative projects that allow us to freely distribute digital information to users all over the world.

What Did the Texas State University Use to Be Called?
Southwest Texas State Normal School was the original name until 1918 when College was added to the end.
Then, in 1923, Normal became Teachers. Southwest Texas State College was the abbreviated version of the name until 1969 when College was replaced by “University.”
As of September 1, Texas State University will officially be known as Texas State University, not Texas State University-San Marcos.
It’s hardly the largest modification. When referring to the institution, most people already omit the San Marcos prefix.
But the change’s supporters are hopeful it would eliminate any uncertainty that now exists over the university’s several sites and the possibility of name changes at other universities within the system.
