Teaching Assistants Non-Payment Issue Resolved 2026

Eastern Cape Education has profusely apologised for delaying payments for its education assistants and general assistants.

The delay is said to have been caused by a system issue that they had back in October 2026 across the province.

A circular was sent to all the schools in province, to pay the workers from the school’s budget.

A refund is on the cards for the schools that had conformed.

We acknowledge the delay and the inconvenience caused, and we thank all our assistants who managed to be patient enough as we work around the clock to resolve the issue and as much as payments have been made to all participating schools to pay the outstanding assistant’s remunerations.

These are the words of Eastern Cape Head of Education, Dr. Naledi Mbude when she released a statement on behalf of the department.

The Education Department made payments to all of the participating schools on Monday 3 January 2026.

The department has also confirmed that the funds will be available on 5th of January 2026.

Eastern Cape urges school to prioritise their education assistants and general assistants’ payments.
