Before gaining admission into the Northern Illinois University applicants must meet the school requirements.

Requirements include English language proficiency and portfolio requirements. Please note admissions are competitive and meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.

Northern Illinois University Admission Requirements are a Minimum of 60% in English 30-1 or a minimum of 65% in English 30-2 or provincial equivalent.

For International students who are currently attending a U.S. high school.

Academic Requirements

1. High school diploma: You must have graduated by the time you start at NIU to be admitted.

2. Grades: You must have passing grades equivalent to a U.S. C+ average on all transcripts and/or exam scores

Documentation Requirements

Incoming freshmen will need to submit the following to be considered for admission to NIU:

1. A completed NIU application

2. Official transcripts from all high schools attended

3. ACT/SAT score (if applicable)

4. Proof of English ability

Note: students on F-1 student visas also need to submit proof of financial ability to receive their immigration documents.

Transfer Application Requirements

Transfer admission criteria are based on the number of completed hours at the time of transfer. How many hours have you taken?

1. Attempted up to 12 semester hours

2. Attempted more than 12 but earned less than 24 semester hours

3. Earned 24 or more hours

SAT and ACT Requirements

Just like other schools have different requirements for standardized testing. Only a few schools require the SAT or ACT, but many look at your scores if you choose to submit them.

Northern Illinois University hasn’t explicitly named a policy on SAT/ACT requirements, because it gives average SAT or ACT scores (we’ll cover this next), it’s likely to test flexibly.

Despite this policy, most students still take the SAT or ACT, and most applicants to Northern Illinois University will submit their scores for them.

If you don’t submit scores, you’ll have one fewer dimension to show that you’re worthy of being admitted, compared to other students.

  • 2.75 undergraduate GPA (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Unofficial transcripts
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Statement of purpose
  • Proof of English proficiency (if applicable)

3. Check in With Your References

Your references are people who will write letters of recommendation for you. You should ask them if they are willing to write a letter before you begin the application process.

4. Start Your Online Application

When you start your application, you’ll be asked to do the following:

  • Provide the required information.
  • Enter email addresses for your references and trigger an email to be sent to them.
  • Upload required materials

5. Finalize and Submit Your Application

Double-check your work. Verify that you have chosen the correct program of study. Pay the application fee online as part of the submission process. If you save your application before you submit it, you can log back in to continue working on it.

Can I Get into NIU With a 2.7 GPA?

Applicants, who have a GPA of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale, are eligible for automatic admittance to NIU.

Also, applicants who have a GPA between 2.50 and 2.99 on a 4.00 scale will have their application go before the Office of Undergraduate Admission for a decision based on a holistic review.

Application Fee for Northern Illinois University

Cost to apply: $60 for degree-seeking students, $10 for students-at-large (not seeking a degree). Also, the application fee is non-refundable.

Please note: While the Graduate School coordinates the admission process, admission decisions are based on the recommendation of the faculty in your intended program.

Does Northern Illinois University Require a Foreign Language?

If you’re pursuing a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree, you need to fulfill a foreign language requirement.

If you plan to fulfill this requirement by studying Spanish at NIU and you have previous experience with the language, you need to take the placement exam.
