The IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center is based in Indianapolis. The cancer center is one of only 51 Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the nation, according to the National Cancer Institute.
The Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center in Indianapolis is the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in the state and is home to the cure for testicular cancer that has saved hundreds of thousands of lives as well as the only healthy breast tissue bank in the world that has been a resource to researchers around the world to learn more about the disease.

Its goal is to end the burden of cancer in Indiana and elsewhere.
Many of the researchers at the cancer center are housed at Joseph E. Walther Hall, which is Indiana University’s largest research facility.
There are more than 270 researchers affiliated with the center (see the online directory), comprising scientists in demographic, clinical, and fundamental science. The researchers work on four different projects.
These projects aim to understand the molecular alterations that lead to cancer and to create tailored medicines to both prevent and treat it.
Members of the center include professors from the IU Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health at IUPUI, the IU School of Medicine, and the IU School of Nursing.
The physician scientists at the center have produced discoveries that have revolutionized medical practice and defined protocols:
a. Breast cancer
b. Gastrointestinal cancer, including pancreatic and colon cancers
c. Genitourinary cancer, such as testis, bladder and prostate cancers
d. Hematologic disorders, including multiple myeloma and leukemia
e. Thoracic cancer
f. Thymoma and thymic carcinoma
g. Tumors associated with neurofibromatosis type 1, primarily in children
h. Umbilical stem cell transplantation
In order to enhance the health of Hoosiers, the center works with partner organizations throughout Indiana. Collaboration initiatives are focused on reducing cancer diagnoses and mortality, especially in underserved populations.
This includes efforts to increase HPV vaccination rates in addition to developing, assessing, and disseminating treatments to improve breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screening in Indiana’s ethnically diverse and rural communities.

A Cancer Center Designated by the National Cancer Institute
One of only 51 Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the US and the only one in Indiana, the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center is designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). (See the banner made to commemorate this achievement.)
The NCI has designated cancer centers that are proven to have top-notch, cutting-edge programs for interdisciplinary cancer research that fulfill rigorous standards.
The research programs, faculty, and facilities that these centers are creating will improve methods for cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
The NCI designation provides access to more government funds, information exchange, and resources in addition to recognizing achievement.
The center’s strength in basic, clinical, and population research, as well as its strong educational initiatives and successful community outreach programs throughout the state, are all recognized by the comprehensive designation.

Kenya’s Special Breast Tissue Bank
The first and only such bank, the Susan G. Komen Tissue Bank at the IU Simon Cancer Center, gathers breast tissue samples from women who do not have breast cancer.
In order to better understand the molecular alterations associated with the disease, researchers may be able to distinguish between healthy and malignant tissue by obtaining samples from women who do not have breast cancer. The samples in the bank are accessible to scientists all across the world.
Through the Indiana University-led AMPATH (Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare) consortium, the center collaborates with Moi University School of Medicine and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in western Kenya.
Over five million underprivileged individuals in western Kenya are treated by AMPATH Oncology. The work done by the center in Kenya has been praised by NCI assessors as “an outstanding example for tackling global cancer inequalities and health equality.”
