Majority of people using cooking gas don’t know that their gas cylinder has an expiry date. They don’t know when the gas cylinders will expire and when it does, it can result in leakage that can lead to an explosion.

Gas cylinders are essential components in our kitchens and almost every home owns it. it is important to know that a gas cylinder could be as dangerous as its importance if certain factors are not checked when due.

Cooking gas cylinders must not exceed five years: most people using gas cylinders hardly remember when it was bought. It is important to keep track of the days and replace them as soon as possible.

· Watch out for the expiry dates: The steps to check the expiry date are very simple and basic. The expiry of LPG cylinder can be found on one of the metal strips that connect the body of the cylinder to top ring (handle). It is mentioned on the inner side of the strip. The strip has any of the alphabets from A to D painted on it along with a number. Decoding the expiry date is simple. The alphabet represents the month it expires while the number indicates the year. A year is divided into four quarters :

How to check if your gas cylinder expiry date

The Expiring date is coded on the side of the cylinder in alphabetical order. A,B,C,D in quarters.

A – stands for ‘1st quarter’ (January to March)

 

B – stands for ‘2nd quarter’ (April to June)

 

C – stands for the 3rd quarter (July to September)

 

D – stands for the 4th quarter (October to December)

 

For Example : If you see D.23, it means the expiry of the gas cylinder is within the fourth quarter of the year 2023; From October to December 2023.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Most LPG cylinders out there are fake, you may not see these inscription on them. For original cylinders (mostly from Petroleum companies-like those common ones from Total, Oando, etc), all data (including weight) are engraved on the body of the cylinder-that is, the side.
