Graduate Marine Engineering, also known as GME, is a one-year diploma training program that students who want to work in the merchant marine industry must complete. The Directorate General of Shipping oversees the colleges that provide this curriculum and sets the eligibility and admission requirements.

GME Curriculum
Two semesters can be used to divide the GME curriculum. The coursework is intended to provide students with in-depth instruction in oceanographic engineering as well as engineering for ships, boats, oil rigs, and other maritime structures.

GME Admission Process
Entrance Exam-Based Admission
- Visit the university’s official admissions website to sign up for the entrance exam.
- After that, complete the application form by adding the necessary information.
- Online application fee payment.
- Print outs of the application form and fee receipt should be submitted and kept.
Merit-Based Admission
- Students are selected based on the merit score .
- Colleges will release a GME minimum cut off list every year.
- Students need to reserve their seat for admission by providing necessary documents and paying the admission fee.

Eligibility Criteria
Each institute has its own requirements for GME course eligibility. To be admitted, most institutes demand that applicants meet the fundamental qualifying requirements listed below.
- Qualifications in terms of education: The candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree (BE or B.Tech) with a minimum aggregate score of 60% at the undergraduate level and a concentration in either mechanical engineering or naval architecture.
- English fluency is a must for the position. English had to have been a required subject at the 10+2 level exams with a minimum score of 50%.
- Age: The candidates must not be higher than 28 years of age at the time of training start date.

Medical fitness: Candidates must have 6/6 or perfect vision and must have perfect hearing without any hearing aids. The candidate must not have colour blindness. A medical exam will be conducted to test if the candidate is medically fit.

Admission to GME courses is mainly through entrance examinations, but colleges like Praveenya Institute of Marine Engineering & Maritime Studies admit students on a merit basis.
