Ghanaians Over 70 Can Now Receive Free Health Care

Ghanaians over 70 can now receive free health care. The policy document enacting this was signed by President Nana Akufo-Addo.

 

It ensures that the required 30-day waiting period won’t apply to them and exempts them from paying the processing and premium payments associated with this category of the National Health Insurance Scheme.

 

President Akufo-Addo said, “This is a major milestone in the healthcare system for the aged to receive free healthcare under NHIS,” as he signed the document at Jubilee House.

The NHIA Board was in attendance at Jubilee House to brief President Akufo-Addo on initiatives launched and advancements made thus far.

 

The membership of the scheme has increased to 27 million Ghanaians in the last six years, according to the NHIA Chief Executive, Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye. This has been facilitated by the scheme’s short code scheme, which was recently launched and was also utilized by about 13 million scheme members to renew their membership this year.

 

By 2023, he claims, they anticipate an increase in membership to 18 million. The Chief Executive stated that 70 percent of claims are now managed electronically, and manual claims will be eliminated by the end of the following year.

 

This will assist in removing false claims. The authority also launched the NHIA APP on Monday to enable quick and simple membership registration without having to go to the authority’s offices. Dr. Okoe-Boye demanded an increase in the 6-cedis processing charge in order to gather enough money to cover claims. Free Elderly Healthcare for Ghanaians over 70 is the newest inclusion.

The Health Insurance Authority has received praise from President Akufo-Addo for its accomplishments thus far, particularly the program’s provision of free healthcare for the elderly.
