It’s too bad when people who are supposed to be your friends and peers are only intimidating you negatively. There are so many people out there who are fighting peer pressure. Likewise, many others have given in to it and done several things they don’t mean to do.
Are there ways of eliminating this monster that is gradually eating away at our youths? Indeed, there are ways of slowly pulling peer pressure out of the lives of teenagers and youths. However, you must realize that your defeat of peer pressure relies on you.
Here are some tips for fighting peer pressure:
Avoid the negative friends
Stay away from those pushing you into doing those things you don’t want to do. The less you hang around them, the less pressure you feel from them.
Join a New Circle
Find people who share the same interest as you and move with them. It is a way of moving on from your old life to a new ground.
Let your ‘Yes’ be yes and your ‘No’ no. Don’t mingle with words or seem uncertain about your decisions. As long as you want to do it, do it convincingly. With this, you’ll prove to them that your opinions stand, and they’ll respect you.
Enhance Your Self-Esteem
If you’re the victim of bullying, don’t let them take advantage of you. Man up and face the situation squarely, showing them that you have your dignity. If possible, confront the leader of the opposition and stand your ground.
Don’t try to do anything because everyone else is doing it. Moreover, something that works for others may not certainly work for you. Be your person and don’t change who you are.
Never keep silent when you’re undergoing peer pressure. Express yourself and your feelings to someone close to you. In cases of physical abuse, report immediately to any authority.
