Tuition & Fees

The costs of your education at CapU will include tuition and program fees, incidental fees and additional costs for supplies and equipment.

Student Success Fee

New: After careful consideration and consultation with the Capilano Student’s Union (CSU), the Student Success Fee was implemented effective September 2023 to support new initiatives in three key areas:

  • Student Transitions: new student orientation programming and events, new student engagement programming
  • Student Development: leadership programming and development, including peer tutoring and employment opportunities for students
  • Well-being: expanded support services including counselling services, equity, diversity and inclusion education and initiatives and mental health and well-being programming

Mandatory and Incidental Fees

When you apply to attend CapU, you’ll pay a non-refundable application fee.

  • Canadian citizens and permanent residents pay $50.
  • International students pay $135 (plus a deposit – see below).

Once you’re admitted, in addition to tuition fees you’ll pay certain mandatory fees, such as fees for student union membership and transit passes.

Incidental fees can include late payment fees, costs for transcripts, charges for form replacements, and other services. For a full list, check out incidental fees.

Tuition-Free* Courses

Capilano University offers some courses tuition-free* for Canadian citizens and permanent residents, as well as seniors.

You can take classes through Adult Basic Education in English, math, sciences, computers and study skills.

If you’re a Canadian student, you’re able to take tuition-free* English-as-a-second-language (ESL) classes.

If you’re 65 or older, courses are tuition-free* at CapU**.

Note:

*For tuition-free courses, surcharge tuition, mandatory fees and incidental fees still apply.

**This does not apply to Continuing Studies courses.

Deposit for new international students

If you’re a new international student applying to Capilano University for the first time, you need to pay a one-time $5,000 deposit. This deposit will be applied against your international tuition fees once you’ve registered in courses at the University.

The refund policy for students from India, Vietnam, China, Pakistan, Senegal, Morocco and the Philippines varies. If you are from one of these countries, refer to your original Letter of Offer.

Deposit exceptions

If you are enrolled in distance education, exchange or government-sponsored study abroad program, the $5,000 deposit does not apply to you.

Study permit denial

If you have not received or have been denied a study permit/visa and cannot attend Capilano University, you must drop all classes before the start of the term to receive a full refund. For study permit denials, email SFA@capilanou.ca, include your 9-digit student number and a copy of your visa denial to initiate a refund. If you paid your deposit through Flywire, you will be refunded through Flywire.

If it is found that you have provided fraudulent documentation as part of their study permit/visa application, a full refund will not be issued.

You must take a minimum of nine credits to be considered a full-time student. Most courses are worth three credits and most programs consider 15 credits (five courses) a maximum full-time course load for one term.

Reporting tuition on your student permit extension

When you apply for a student permit extension, you may need to include evidence of your upcoming tuition costs. Calculate your tuition estimate for one term with 15 credits, print the page and include it with your permit extension application.

When you indicate the tuition amount on your permit extension application, multiply the estimate by two so that it covers both fall and winter terms.

Cost of living

As well as tuition and fees, you need to plan for the day-to-day costs of a student living away from home, such as food, accommodation and socializing. Print the cost-of-living table and include it with your study permit application.

Immigration Status Change

If you receive Permanent Resident, Protected Person, or Convention Refugee status in Canada, tuition and fees will be assessed at the domestic rate beginning in the term the change in immigration status takes effect. If notification and the applicable supporting documentation is received by the OUR by the Last day to add or drop Regular Session classes, the change takes effect in the current academic term. Any notification, including the submission of supporting documentation, received after the Last day to add or drop Regular Session classes will result in the change taking effect in the next academic term.

Refugees or Protected Persons

If the IRB has accepted your claim and you have Convention Refugee or Protected Person status, submit your Notice of Decision to the OUR. Convention Refugees or Protected Persons who do not have Permanent Residence status must consult with a regulated immigration advisor at MacEwan International before applying to the university to discuss study permit requirements while awaiting a decision on their Permanent Residence status application.

Refugee or Protected Person claimants

Refugee or Protected Person claimants whose Notice of Decision is pending are deemed to be an international student when enrolled at the university and are subject to all policies and regulations applicable to international students. This includes the assessment of tuition and fees which are assessed at the international tuition rate. Most Refugee and Protected Person claimants require a study permit to pursue post-secondary studies. Consult a regulated immigration advisor at MacEwan International to discuss your study permit requirements.
