Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund covers tuition and certain mandatory fees for the time being when the student is awarded a scholarship or enrolls in a participating school, whichever is later.

If you choose to enroll a child before you have been awarded a scholarship and the school has completed an SCF form, you will be responsible for any financial obligations incurred and may not qualify for future scholarship funding.

Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund strongly encourages families not to enroll a student in a non-public school without an official scholarship award. You can only do this if you have a financial plan to pay, out of pocket or otherwise, for any financial obligations at the school.

Eligibility For The Alabama Scholarship Fund

  •  Students entering Kindergarten to grade twelve may be considered for scholarships, provided. However, the rising kindergarten student must be five years old by September 1. Additionally, no student must be over 18 years old at the time of application.
  •  In order to be considered for a scholarship, all applicants must be “income eligible.” Income eligibility requires that the applicant’s gross annual income not exceed a certain threshold based upon the household size.

The Alabama Accountability Act gives priority to certain categories of students. These priorities include;

  •  Students are zoned to a “failing” public school, as designated annually by the Alabama State Department of Education are given priority.
  •  No scholarship award may be made to a new non-failing student until after July 31, 2023.
  •  Failing or non-failing public school assignments must be verified by the required Verification of Public School Assignment Form contained in this application.
  •  All applying students are subject to the failing school award priorities. In addition,
  • the law requires that no more than one-quarter of new scholarships awarded annually go to students who were continuously enrolled in private education in the preceding academic year.
  •  All new students shall submit to Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund a full-year report card for the 2023 school year. This is in order to determine whether the student shall be considered “private” for the purposes of the law.

How To Apply

The Alabama Accountability Act defines a “family” as “a group of two or more people
related by birth, marriage, or adoption, including foster care, who reside together.”

Accordingly, a parent or guardian may apply for a student to whom the applicant is related by birth, marriage, adoption, or who is the legal guardian of an applicant student in foster care, so long as the applicant adult and student reside together.

Here Is What You Need To Do If When Applying For An Alabama Scholarship fund.

  •  Each family is required to verify annual household income for the previous calendar year when applying.
  • In reviewing your application, AOSF will look at all the people who live in your household and all the income that is derived from the people who live in the household.
  • Income sources include, but are not limited to: prior calendar year Alabama Income Tax filings (Alabama Form 40), W2s, Social Security Income/Disability for every household member (including children), Child Support, any other non-taxable/taxable income.
  • Applicants must also submit verification of their household composition, as well as a verification of their Alabama Public School Assignment.
  • First-time applicants must also submit either a birth certificate (for rising Kindergarten students) or a full-year report card for the previous academic year.
  • Completing this process is the responsibility of the parent/guardian, not the school.
  • Applications are considered on a first-come, first-served basis. An application cannot be
  • considered for eligibility until both the application and all required supporting documentation have been received.
  • Scholarship awards are dependent on standards contained in the Alabama Accountability Act as well as funding availability.

The applying parent or guardian must certify that he or she has completed the
scholarship application fully and accurately. They must also show that the true circumstances of the applicant’s household size and income, and any other statements related to eligibility are reflected in the application.

The misrepresentation of application information or the failure of an applicant parent or guardian to disclose information relevant to scholarship eligibility may result in the
refusal or revocation of a scholarship award.

AOSF reserves the right to verify any information submitted in the process of the application or required documentation process.

Applicant families who are awarded an Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund will be subject to the program and reporting requirements of the Alabama Accountability Act.

These requirements include the reporting of a student’s scholarship award status to the Alabama Department of Revenue.

In addition, students who are awarded a scholarship under the Alabama Accountability Act may be required to take a standardized, norm-referenced test, the results of which must be submitted by the scholarship student’s Partner School to Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund and the Alabama Department of Revenue.

Withdrawing From The Scholarship Program Or Declining A Scholarship

After being awarded a scholarship, a parent or guardian may elect to decline a scholarship. A scholarship may be declined either before or after enrolling and attending a partner school, resulting in the applicant’s voluntary withdrawal from the scholarship program.

Should you choose to withdraw from the scholarship program at any time during the academic year, please contact Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund and the partner school if applicable, as soon as possible.

Please be aware that withdrawal from the scholarship program at any time does not disqualify the student from the future application, but the student may be considered “new” for the purposes of Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund scholarship eligibility for future years.
