Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe (NOCEN), has a long and rich history of training teachers in Nigeria. Founded in 1973, NOCEN was established to help address the shortage of qualified teachers in the post-civil War era.

NOCEN began operations on January 29, 1973, under the leadership of its first Principal, Dr. J.U.A. Okeke. Initially, the college offered the Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) in five major areas of study: English, Mathematics, Economics, Chemistry, and Biology. Over time, additional departments and programs were added to meet the evolving needs of Nigeria’s education system.
